Year 12 Agriculture Students Get Hands-On Insight at Australian Grain Technologies

This week, Year 12 Agriculture students had the exciting opportunity to visit Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) for a behind-the-scenes tour of their world-class facilities.

During the visit, students explored how AGT cross-pollinates wheat to create new and improved varieties for Australian farmers. They were introduced to the innovative use of grow rooms, which allow scientists to fast-track generations of selective breeding—accelerating the development of high-performing wheat lines.

The tour continued with a close-up look at the harvesters and seeders used for crop trials conducted across the state. Students followed the full journey from research to field testing and finished at the quality assurance stage, where each wheat variety is rigorously tested for its baking performance, including dough quality and even taste.

The experience gave students a deeper appreciation for the science, technology and innovation that goes into wheat variety development.
