Year 10 English Focuses on Advocacy and Social Change for First Nations Communities
Year 10 English students at Xavier College Two Wells are using their voices for change through a new advocacy task that places the spotlight on political, social, or economic issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
The unit, titled ‘Advocacy’, invites students to create persuasive texts in a format of their choice to raise awareness and galvanise support for a cause affecting First Nations communities. The task is designed to develop students’ ability to communicate effectively for social change, while encouraging a deeper understanding of justice, equity, and moral responsibility.
In preparing their texts, students explore the complexities of Indigenous issues in Australia, from systemic inequality and health disparities to land rights and cultural preservation. They are expected to employ persuasive techniques such as emotive appeals, credible evidence, and rhetorical structure to create impactful messages that speak directly to their chosen audience.
The task supports students’ development as writers and speakers while cultivating empathy, ethical reasoning, and a commitment to reconciliation. This unit stands as a powerful example of how education can inspire young people to engage meaningfully with Australia’s shared history, and help shape a more inclusive future.
