Rachel Awarded Prestigious Márta Svéd Scholarship

Year 12 Xavier College student, Rachel, has been named one of only three female students to receive the Márta Svéd Scholarship, an award established by the University of Adelaide’s School of Mathematical Sciences to support and encourage women pursuing a career in mathematics.

The scholarship provides recipients with $5000 in financial support, a personal staff mentor, and access to a range of enrichment opportunities throughout their degree. It is designed to inspire more young women to study mathematics and contribute to fields where female representation remains limited.

To earn her place, Rachel completed a written application, received a teacher recommendation, and attended an interview with the Heads of Mathematics and representatives from the University of Adelaide.

“The interview was very stressful, but the panel from Adelaide University were all lovely, which made it less nerve-racking,” Rachel said.

“I met some of the other shortlisted applicants from different schools, and they were all so impressive, so I was very excited when I found out I was one of the recipients.”

Rachel plans to study a double degree in Bachelor of Mathematics and Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Adelaide next year.

“I’ve always been skilled in maths, but I didn’t start to love it until the later years of high school when it became more challenging. I developed a real joy for solving harder problems,” she explained.

“I want to work in the space sector and be involved with satellites, I find them fascinating. The space industry is really growing here in South Australia, and I’m excited about the opportunities that will come with that.”

Reflecting on her achievement, Rachel shared how meaningful this recognition is after a busy and demanding final year.

“I was so excited when I found out. This year has been long and difficult at times, and it’s amazing to know that my effort and dedication were worth it.”

Congratulations, Rachel, on this outstanding accomplishment. We look forward to seeing all that she achieves as she continues her studies in mathematics and engineering.
